Idea #1 (Chosen Idea):This was my first idea, and my chosen idea. I chose the shark because I feel like it challenged me since there was an odd shape to the body, having the mouth open would be a challenge for me to do. I took inspiration from above because what all of those sculptures have in common is that they all have a lot of features that are detailed. I felt with choosing the shark, I could show many details in many places, like in the teeth, the gum's, and the water.

Idea #2:My second idea was to make a flower pot shaped like a flamingo with flowers inside. The reason why I didn't choose this idea was because I wanted to make an animal with a lot of details. But, if I were to do this idea, it wouldn't be taking inspiration from the photos above since it would just be a simplistic flamingo, with detailed flowers inside of it. But, I really wanted to do an animal, and show its major features.

Idea #3:This is my last idea, this is a cup but taking the form of a flamingo, with the wing on the actual cup, and the head of the flamingo as the handle. The reason why I didn't choose this idea was because I felt like it was too simplistic. Again, I wanted to do just an animal, but showing a lot of detail in that animal. Last year in art, we also did cups, so I've done it before and this time I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and try something new.

During the process of making the shark, I had trouble in the beginning. I wasn't sure of the approach that I was supposed to take to make the basic shape of the shark. A major turning point for me was when I figured out how to make the shape, and after that everything went smoothly. I decided to make the lower part of the mouth using the clay that I had, and than separately I made the top mouth and formed the two mouths together. A challenge that I faced while making the shark was I realized that the main shape wasn't being formed because the head was small at the top. It was too thin, so I had to put more clay to make the head look proportional so the shark would look like shark. The turning point which brought the whole shape of the shark together was when I finally realized that the top of the shark head was way too small and too thin. When I added more clay it was a turning point because it all came together and started looking more like a shark. After that, I just had to make little adjustments and it looked like a shark. The other challenge I had was making the teeth, I was really worried that if I made the teeth that when I put it in the kiln it wouldn't be attached properly and they would fall off. I didn't want to take the risk of not scoring and slipping every tooth to the mouth properly, so I decided to roll out a line of clay, flatten it, and cut out teeth, I than attached it as one row to the top and did the same for the bottom. My last turning point was when I decided to show the lines in the gum of the shark, I really wanted to show a lot of details and let the shark tell the story itself, with it coming out of the water. When I added the line I felt like it really allowed the shark to show how it is not a friendly shark. After I made the shark, I made the water that it was coming out of. Now, when I made the water I didn't want to just make a flat surface, so a turning point was when I decided to curve the edges upwards, so it looks like its a freeze frame of a shark just coming out of the water, and the water having a reaction and splashing everywhere.

A person viewing my final artwork, they should be able to see the interpretation of a shark. It may come off as how sharks do in movies with being scary, and how sharks are portrayed as for eating people. But, in this piece I really wanted to express how things aren't always the way that people preserve them as. I did this by showing how sharks are preserved, by having the shark coming out of the water, and with the detailing on the gums, it makes it look scary. But than, through the white teeth I wanted to show that it wasn't harming anything, in movies sharks teeth are usually dirty, or have blood but this one doesn't. As well, through the water, I made the water very peaceful, with little waves to show peace within the shark, and that the shark is just minding its own business in its home, the ocean. It is in groups when sharks are more violent, I made the shark alone to give the message of individuality, and to show you only really get to know someone or something when you learn about them one on one. Not when they are in a group, trying to prove themselves, or act differently, like sharks in a group.
Looking at my technical approach at this sculpture, I feel like a did a good job, though there is always room for improvement. I feel like I got the shape of the shark, but looking at it from the right side, I could of made above the eyeball have a little bump and curve back inwards like I did on the picture to the right. I also feel when I was painting it, I could of got in more of the crevices, I feel like there are tiny spots that didn't have paint in it. I also if I could fix, I would of changed the colour of the gum, I feel like the red was too bold of an approach, and stands out too much with the shark. |
